Galveston Brain Injury Conference
        Transitional Learning Center

The Center offers research support to the Transitional Learning Center (TLC), a community-based facility providing direct services to persons with disabilities and their families. UTMB postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and faculty conduct research at the TLC and this collaboration has produced the Galveston Brain Injury Conference (GBIC).  The meeting is a Gordon-style conference with invited participants who are national and international leaders in the field of brain injury research.  The conference provides significant national visibility for rehabilitation research at UTMB.

2008 Galveston Brain Injury Conference
The 2008 conference is scheduled May 15-16, 2008 and will focus on aging with traumatic brain injury.  Topics will include dementia, quality of life, prevalence and incidence, impairment, and treatment.  Dr. Wayne Gordon from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York will facilitate the meeting.  More information about the 2008 conference is forthcoming.

Robert L. Moody Prize for Distinguished Initiatives in Brain Injury Research and Rehabilitation
The Moody Prize is given to recognize an individual or individuals who have made significant contributions in brain injury research, and to increase awareness, improve treatment, and provide incentives for future initiatives.

Highlights from the 2006 - 2007 Galveston Brain Injury Conferences
The 2007 conference, held April 25-27, was a continuation of the 2006 conference focusing on pediatric issues surrounding traumatic brain injury. Roberta DePompei, PhD, an expert in brain injury recognized for her research and development of clinical techniques for cognitive-communication and school reintegration issues for youth, facilitated the event.  Meeting participants continued discussions in the following areas: neuropsychological, neurophysical, and development; assessment and outcomes; school transition intervention education; and transition into adulthood and community.  Articles developed during the conference process will be published as a special issue of the Journal of Head Trauma Research.

The Robert L. Moody Prize was presented to John Corrigan for his significant contributions to the field of brain injury rehabilitation.  Dr. Corrigan is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ohio State University.  He is the founder and Director of the Ohio Valley Center for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation, which serves as an umbrella for research and program development related to traumatic brain injury in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
