Those who dealt with him only knew he was a retired doctor from Texas. But the mysterious resident of the former Canyon City Inn was actually a quiet benefactor to many. Covington routinely sent checks to Azusa to pay for the upkeep of the flowers in front of City Hall. He gave money to colleges and, at Christmas he would hand over a check to a local educator and tell him to do good with it. The doctor's legacy also includes scholarship and loans at colleges. John Koloen, media relations specialist for the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, said Covington is a donor for the medical school alumni loan program but he has no other information.
