Guidry News Service recently visited with Dr. Mostafa Borahay, the co-director of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at UTMB, who is part of a research team that is studying a drug, normally used to fight cholesterol, that may prevent hysterectomies in women with uterine fibroids. The scientists have launched innovative research using a group of drugs called statins that have been used to treat cholesterol for decades. “For the first time, we demonstrated that the statins are able to kill these tumors,” Dr. Borahay said.
