FOR RELEASE: Sept. 1, 2006
The University of Texas Medical Branch schools, administrative offices and clinics will be closed for the Labor Day holiday Monday, Sept. 4.
Patients seeking non-emergency medical care such as treatment for colds and flu, jellyfish stings, minor burns, rashes, earache and any other basic medical need can receive treatment from a UTMB doctor at the at the West Isle Telemed clinic over the holiday weekend.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day, the clinic will be open in the Jamaica Beach City Hall Public Services Building at 16628 San Luis Pass Rd. A clinic visit costs $50, payable by cash, check or credit card. Appointments and insurance are not accepted.
The UTMB Electronic Health Network, in partnership with the city of Jamaica Beach, the West Galveston Island Property Owners Association and the Galveston County Health District, created West Isle Telemed as a solution to weekend medical care on Galveston’s West End during the busy summer months. Assisted by a paramedic, the patient is examined by a physician remotely using a telemedicine T-cart equipped with medical devices and a video screen for a face-to-face, real-time consultation. This weekend is the last clinic session for this year.
Patients with potentially life-threatening conditions should always seek immediate care through the emergency room. Such conditions may include severe chest pain; sudden weakness and loss of vision; head injury or serious trauma; sudden confusion in the elderly; high fever, diarrhea or vomiting in an infant less than two years old; severe breathing problems; or poisoning or drug overdose.
All UTMB departments will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 5. UTMB hospitals and emergency room never close.
