By UTMB’s Dr. Richard Rupp and Bridget Hawkins, Ph.D: More than 90 cases of measles across numerous states have been linked to visiting or coming into contact with someone who visited Disneyland this past holiday season. Many more potential cases are still under investigation. Already, at least six people have been hospitalized in association with this growing outbreak. This outbreak and previous measles outbreaks point out how dangerous the anti-vaccination movement can be. It is a sad fact that some people refuse to believe scientific data, using discredited or pseudo-science to back their claims about the dangers of vaccines. The number of parents asserting their personal choice to not vaccinate their children has reached a critical level. Other families can no longer feel safe in public places. Parents should not have to fear taking their family to public places including Disneyland. We need to stop the unscientific and irrational campaign against vaccines.
