Houston's higher-education institutions run much like for-profit companies in the area, with all eyes on the bottom line. Houston Business Journal's List of the Highest-Paid College & University Executives includes the top people at global powerhouses. Here's the lowdown on the Top 9, including UTMB’s Drs. David Callender and Danny Jacobs, on how they got there and what they're working on. Q: What are you working on right now at UTMB Health? Callender A: Knowing there are shortages in the health care work force, we are increasing enrollment in a manageable way and looking for innovative ways to reduce student debt and the time it takes to get a degree, all without compromising the quality of our curriculum. We are increasing access to quality health care by opening new clinics in areas that need our services, constructing new hospitals in League City and Galveston and welcoming the Angleton Danbury Campus to the university. And we are looking for the best ways to improve our financial status over the next five years to ensure we have the resources to make strategic investments in our mission well into the future. Jacobs A: As an institution, we have identified four pillars: people, value, strategic management and growth, in addition to resources. It is critically important to tie everything we do to specific actions that we will take to improve our performance, starting with delivering the very best care to all, while training the workforce of the future.
