You’ve been here how long?

Some have just started their career and others have been at UTMB for decades. So every year UTMB salutes faculty and staff who have achieved longevity milestones. This year’s Employee Service Day will honor more than 1,500 employees, ranging in service from five years to 45 years. And more than 500 employees will be recognized for “Going the Extra Mile” in their jobs. The event will be held on the Galveston Campus from noon to 1 p.m. in the Levin Hall Main Auditorium.

Hector P. Garcia award

UTMB is now accepting nominations for the Hector P. Garcia, M.D., Cultural Competence Award. UTMB students will be asked to submit an essay as it relates to their ability to work with, conduct research or treat people from diverse cultures. Garcia, a UTMB medical school graduate, was a Mexican-American physician, surgeon, World War II veteran and civil rights advocate. He earned national prominence through his work on behalf of Hispanic Americans. UTMB has been at the vanguard of recognizing and responding to the need for cultural competency and bilingualism in the health care workforce. The Bilingual Health Track is the second-largest track in the School of Medicine, graduating 19 scholars this past May and with more than 100 medical students participating in track activities. Deadline for the essay is Friday.
