“Engaging Trainees: Emerging challenges in global health” will be the focus of the fourth annual Global Health Symposium set for Oct. 10th in the Levin Hall auditorium on the Galveston campus. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Andres Lescano from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Lescano has been conducting research in parasitic infections for two decades. The symposium is sponsored by UTMB’s Coordinating Center for Global Health.

Taglialatela named to national peer review panel

Dr. Giulio Taglialatela, professor of neurology and vice chair for research, will serve as a member of the Clinical Neuroscience and Neurodegeneration Study Section for the Center for Scientific Review. The CSR study section is a peer review panel that evaluates research grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health. His term will continue through June 30, 2019.

White coats for nurse students

The UTMB School of Nursing held its first White Coat Ceremony on Aug. 31. The event was supported by the School of Nursing, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the SON Alumni Association.

Sports injury clinic offered Saturdays this fall

UTMB will offer a youth and school sports injury clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays through Nov. 7 at the Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Gulf Freeway S., in League City. From bumps to bruises, knee pain, pulled muscles, twisted ankles or shoulder pain, the UTMB sports medicine team is specially trained to treat a full range of sports injuries. Odunsi named a Schweitzer Fellow

UTMB medical student Tobi Odunsi has been named a member of the 2015-16 class of Albert Schweitzer Fellows from the Houston/Galveston area. The one-year mentored fellowship program is focused on health-related community service and leadership development. Odunsi is working with the YWCA to implement her “mind-enrichment” program that is focused on encouraging youngsters 14 to 20 to lead healthier lifestyles.

Dasco named Osler scholar

Dr. Matt Dasco, assistant professor of internal medicine and director of UTMB’s Center for Global Health Education, recently was inaugurated as a William Osler Scholar in the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine. The Academy was founded at UTMB in 2001 to recognize physicians who provide highly compassionate care and to encourage the teaching and practice of such care to medical students.

Barral wins Dickens memorial award

Dr. José Barral, associate professor of neuroscience and cell biology, and associate dean for academic affairs in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, was selected as the recipient of the 2015 Jimmy Doyle Dickens Memorial Faculty Award. The award, given annually, was established by the 1971 graduating class and recognizes an outstanding professor who exemplifies the qualities that should typify all future physicians — humility, humanity and integrity.
