UTMB’s David Niesel and Norbert Herzog write about the many viruses that lurk in the human genetic code. Many of these viruses have become so entwined with our genes that they perform services that we could not live without. One example of this mutually beneficial relationship occurs when a virus within a fertilized human egg – the virus helps to orchestrate the proteins needed for the egg to continue developing into a healthy fetus.
