Dr. Steve Lieberman, senior Dean for Administration in the School of Medicine, has been named interim dean of the new medical school at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley while the school searches for a permanent dean. Lieberman takes over for Dr. Francisco Fernandez, who announced last week that he was stepping down. Lieberman will retain duties at the University of Texas Medical Branch that include teaching and helping with the medical branch’s TEAM Clinic in Texas City. The first class of the UTRGV medical school is scheduled to convene this fall.

The Internal Communications Team in Marketing and Communications has won three awards from professional communications groups for a program that provides information about the medical branch to staff, students and faculty. The Public Relations Society of America at an awards ceremony in New York City presented a National Award of Excellence for the Weekly Relays communications project. In addition, the Houston chapter of the society awarded the program a Silver Excalibur Award and the Houston chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators awarded the Bronze Quill Award of Excellence. The Internal Communications team, working with an internal team of representatives from all sections of the medical branch, developed and implemented the Weekly Relays.

Nurses honored for annual report

The medical branch’s Nursing Service received a Houston Press Club’s 2016 Lone Star Award for the “UTMB Health Nursing Annual Report” in the Public Relations Annual Report category. The annual event honors the best in Texas media and is open to media professionals working in TV, radio, magazines and to all public relations specialists. Award recipients were honored last month at a banquet at Rice University.

Yanez honored by Angleton high school students

Marcus Yanez, a pharmacy tech at UTMB’s Angleton Danbury Campus, recently was honored by Angleton High School students for being an exceptional teacher. As part of a health technology partnership with area high schools, students go to the campus to shadow professionals and learn about health care careers. The students appreciated Yanez so much, they presented him with a card and invited him attend their graduation ceremony so they could introduce him to their parents.
