Dr. Susan D. McCammon, associate professor of otolaryngology and co-director of the Center for Cancers of the Head and Neck recently was honored for compassionate, patient-centered care as the 2016 recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for Humanism in Medicine. The award was presented at the 2016 of the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. The criteria for the Gold award includes compassion and empathy to patients and their families and co-workers, cultural sensitivity and respect of a patient’s viewpoint.

Torres is editor of new book on E. coli

Alfredo Torres, a professor in microbiology and immunology, is the sole editor of a new book about E. coli. “Escherichia coli in the Americas,” has 15 chapters written by experts who write about basic concepts regarding the different categories of E. coli, including their environmental niche, virulence mechanisms, host reservoir and disease outcomes, as well as diagnosis, vaccine development and treatment. The authors are members of the Latin American Coalition for Escherichia coli Research. Torres is renowned for his expertise of this bacteria that causes disease in animals and humans.

Lockhart and Raimer honored by pediatric society

Drs. Lillian Lockhart and Ben Raimer recently were honored by the Texas Pediatric Society. Lockhart received the Charles W. Daeschner Jr., MD Lifetime Achievement Award and Raimer received the Sidney R. Kaliski Award of Merit. Lockhart’s award is the highest presented by the society and is given to doctors whose careers, lifetime accomplishments and contributions to pediatrics best emulate Daeschner. Raimer’s award is presented to doctors who have been advocates for children and made substantial contributions to the health of children in Texas.

Health policy presentation about Zika this week

Dr. Umair A. Shah, executive director of the Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services, will speak about the Zika virus. His topic is “Forging a Path Ahead: Zika Response and Public Health in Harris County.” The presentation will be at noon Wednesday in the Levin Hall Dining Room on the Galveston Campus. There is no admission charge and members of the public are welcome to attend. The UTMB Health Policy Dialogue is co-sponsored by UTMB’s Center to Eliminate Health Disparities and the UTMB student chapters of the American Medical Association and the Texas Medical Association.

Moody lecture series starts next week

On Oct. 5, The Robert and Russell Moody Lecture Series will begin. The first lecture entitled “Consciousness and the Birth, Life and Death of the Brain” will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Moody Gardens IMAX Theater. The lecture will be presented by Christof Koch, president and chief scientific officer of the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle.
