GALVESTON, Texas — The 2006 Salute to Nursing Golf Tournament and Auction Party raised more than $90,000 to support scholarships for students attending the School of Nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The event was held on Oct. 13.
“This year's Salute to Nursing Golf Tournament and Auction Party was an enormous success, which will provide vital scholarships to our most talented nursing students,” said Pamela G. Watson, dean of the UTMB School of Nursing. “It is through the kindness and generosity of our Salute to Nursing sponsors and participants that we are taking great strides to over come the nurse shortage felt throughout Southeast Texas and ensure a healthier tomorrow for the communities we serve.”
This year’s tournament was in the memory of Johnny McEldowney who died of cancer on Aug. 30, 2006. McEldowney was “a dear friend and ardent supporter” of the school of nursing through the Jamail Galveston Foundation, Watson said. The foundation has supported the tournament since its inception 12 years ago.
In all, 149 golfers, divided into 37 teams, played in the tournament held at the Galveston Country Club. 175 people attended the auction party, held at the Galveston Yacht Club. Dr. Barbara L. Thompson was tournament chairwoman and Elizabeth A. Cook was co-chairwoman. Anne M. Jinkins was honorary chairwoman of the auction party.
