For many years the Zika virus was not something many scientists worried about, which explains why in 2015 they were shocked with it began to spread quickly and caused high rates of birth defects. Now, research by UTMB’s Pei-Yong Shi has identified mutations, including one that caused the virus to spread more quickly in mosquitoes.
