The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become the second deadliest in history with more than 600 confirmed cases and more than 300 deaths. Commenting on the outbreak, UTMB’s Thomas Geisbert said the difficulty fighting the disease is there are three different strains. “When an outbreak occurs, we really don’t know which one of those three strains, species we call them, is the cause of that particular episode,” Geisbert said.
