Throughout the history of space travel about 11 percent of the astronauts have been women. For decades, NASA recruited and flew only all-male crews. That may be changing as some now suggest that women are better suited for space travel than men are. There is quite a bit known about how men handle very long space missions and according to UTMB’s Sheryl Bishop women may handle them just as well or better. “People in habitation situations have to be more interpersonally sensitive. You have to notice, be more communicative,” says Bishop. “Women are acculturated to have a lot of those skills to begin with.”
