Researchers led by UTMB’s Miguel Pappolla were able to dramatically reduce the pain of fibromyalgia patients with medication that targeted insulin resistance. The discovery could dramatically alter the way that some forms of chronic pain can be identified and managed. “Even if it turns out that a subgroup of patients with fibromyalgia is caused by insulin resistance, that is a significant stride forward to finding a treatment that could be more efficacious and have less side effects,” Pappolla said. KPRC’s reports was later broadcast on affiliates nationally.
