The most recent edition of the UT System’s publication looks at 25 drugs that are or may soon be saving and improving the lives of Texans. Several of the advances examined are from UTMB.
- Treating cocaine & meth addiction: Kathryn Cunningham explains that sustained use of an abused drug damages the way that a person’s brain functions. Cunningham’s team is hoping to address the problem with a new medication aimed at cocaine and methamphetamine users.
- How growth hormone can lift the TBI brain fog: Randall Urban and his team at UTMB are using human growth hormone to treat those with traumatic brain injuries. While the research is encouraging, it is very new. Urban and his team are working to develop new studies to learn why growth hormone makes people with TBIs better.
- A new hope for preeclampsia: George Constantine and George Saade’s research using Pravastatin, a commonly prescribed statin for cardiovascular patients, may help to dramatically reduce the incidence of preeclampsia, which complicates 5 to 8 percent of pregnancies.
