In 2016, Zika was in the headlines around the world but since that time attention has turned to other illnesses such as measles and Ebola. However, experts say it is only a matter of time before there is another major Zika outbreak. Experts say little surveillance due to the lack of a rapid, inexpensive diagnostic test is part of the problem. “At this point, we can only guess the number of new infections,” said UMTB’s Scott Weaver.
