Venezuela’s Lake Maracaibo has turned into a polluted wasteland with the collapse of the nation’s oil industry. Rusting platforms and leaking pipelines are a constant source of oozing crude. Locals clean the crabs harvested from the lake before sending them to market, many of them bound for the United States. “The Venezuelan fisher folks are living a hellacious existence,” said UTMB’s Cornelis Elferink.
