People have questioned why COVID-19 makes people sick, and why does it kill some of them. Based on similar illnesses, scientists believe that the difference between lethal infection and one that feels like a cold may have to do with the interaction between the virus and a person’s immune system. UTMB’s Vineet Menachery suspects COVID-19 may work like SARS. “What makes this new virus so damaging is you’re losing lung function, and that puts a strain on every organ in our body,” Menachery said.
