One island with several agendas December 6, 2006 Galveston Daily News, Dec. 6, 2006http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=e3a0eb2a05f61348 By Heber Taylor Galveston doesn’t have a single legislative agenda. It has several. That was obvious at a friendly, informative session on legislative priorities sponsored Tuesday by the Galveston Chamber of Commerce. People representing different interests agreed on some things and disagreed on others. That’s natural...There’s broad agreement that it’s in the best interests of Galveston to support its largest employer, the University of Texas Medical Branch. There seems to be broad support for UTMB’s legislative agenda, which calls for an additional $60 million a year in state funding. But there’s a real question whether UTMB will get all the money it could from the state unless some kind of hospital district, supported by local tax dollars, is created. Other teaching hospitals enjoy that kind of support. People in other parts of the state wonder why the hospital in Galveston is different. « Back | The Newsroom »
