Ft. Detrick to study most dangerous diseases January 24, 2007 Annapolis Capital, Md. Online, Jan. 24, 2007 FORT DETRICK, Md. -- Researchers who study the most dangerous diseases known to man now have new laboratories. The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick is among a handful across the country that study deadly pathogens such as the Ebola and Marburg viruses - which can cause hemorrhagic fevers that are fatal in up to 80 percent of cases. The $3 million renovation at the base near Frederick will allow researchers to expand their research into the diseases and other biological threats which military planners fear could one day be used as weapons. USAMRIID is the lead Department of Defense laboratory researching and developing vaccines and other countermeasures to biological threats that U.S. troops might face and the biosafety level 4 complex is one of only four such facilities in the country. The others are at the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and the Southwest Research Foundation in San Antonio, Dr. Geisbert said. « Back | The Newsroom »
