Community generous during King's illness February 1, 2007 Galveston County Daily News, Feb. 1, 2007 By Maureen Patton I always enjoy reading Dolph Tillotson's list about what's so good about living in Galveston. I'd like to share The Grand's recent experience with your readers that will reaffirm what we've all known for a long time. Once again, living in a small and caring community is worth more than I can say. Last Thursday, for the first time in my 25 years as The Grand's executive director, I had to go onstage to welcome our audience and then announce that the show had been canceled. By now, literally everyone in the world has had access to the story. B.B. King had not been feeling well and his road manager (who is his son) asked if I could have a doctor check him out on the bus before he went on. And here begins the first of many examples of why living on our island is as good as it gets. It so happened that I was at Rudy and Paco when I got the call and had just seen Dr. Don and Frances Powell walk in to have dinner with his associate Dr. Jay Pasricha and his wife, Reena. Don quickly and graciously agreed to help, and both he and Dr. Pasricha went to see Mr. King. After conferring together, they recommended that Mr. King go to the ER and get checked more thoroughly. When I visited him the next day, he was already feeling much better and was more like his usual happy and gregarious self. He spoke so highly of his experience and all of his treatment. Special thanks to Drs. Powell and Pasricha for being kind and smart physicians who left their wives and dinner to help, acting quickly and decisively on Mr. King's behalf; to Dr. Thomas Blackwell for stepping in once Mr. King arrived at the hospital; and to all the nurses and staff at UTMB for getting him "back on the road" in short order. « Back | The Newsroom »
