Perry mandates sex virus vaccine for girls February 5, 2007 Galveston County Daily News, Feb. 3, 2007 AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry ordered Friday that schoolgirls in Texas must be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, making Texas the first state to require the shots. Meanwhile, medical experts, including doctors at the University of Texas Medical Branch, say lawmakers should slow down until more is known about the health effects of the vaccine and how families are going to pay for their daughters to be immunized. "This is a terribly important vaccine and a public health milestone," said Dr. Martin Myers, executive director of the National Network for Immunization Information at the medical branch. "But this is a brand-new vaccine, and it may be premature for it to be mandated." « Back | The Newsroom »
