American Cancer Society launches Road to Recovery February 15, 2007 Houston Chronicle, Feb. 15, 2007 Patricia Martinez no longer drives. The 59-year-old Baytown woman stopped a while back because of chronic health problems. So, when she was told that she would need weeks of daily radiation treatments for breast cancer, she was worried about how she would make the life-saving appointments. "I don't drive, my daughter's car is broke, and I don't get out and talk to people," said Martinez. "I thought I wouldn't be able to take them (treatments) because I had no way." But throughout her radiation therapy, which lasted from Dec. 19 through Wednesday, Martinez was driven to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital's Cancer Center by volunteers with the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery transportation program. Now the American Cancer Society Gulf Coast Region is kicking off a recruitment effort to attract more drivers for its transportation program. The program supplies transportation assistance to about 20 medical facilities, including the Texas Medical Center, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and institutions in Montgomery, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties. « Back | The Newsroom »
