For many, I-45 more than way to get around March 22, 2007 Galveston County Daily News, March 22, 2007 GALVESTON, Texas - Lisa Garcia has seen people do a lot of strange things in their cars. "I've seen people on their laptops while driving, eating their breakfast, putting on their makeup," said Garcia during one of her commutes. "I've seen them reading a map right in front of the windshield." And that's just during her commute to work. Garcia is among the estimated 250,400 people a day who travel on Interstate 45. The major portion of the Galveston County commuters on the freeway each day can be attributed to those who work at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. More than half of its 6,300-member work force commutes to the island from mainland communities. Many do so in groups, car pools and, in some cases, vanpools to save on transportation costs and parking fees. Even the shortest of commutes to the medical center provides for some interesting relationships. "It's a four-wheel version of ‘Sex and the City,'" said Giselle Torres, a video producer with the medical branch's public affairs department. "It's all women in the car right now and we talk a lot about guys and our love life." « Back | The Newsroom »
