Texas health care in critical condition April 2, 2007 Symposium to tackle topic of uninsured, underinsured and ways to defray costs Midland Reporter-Telegram, March 31, 2007 MIDLAND - Ten to 20 years down the road, Texas will be facing a huge crisis due to the rising cost of health care and steps should be taken now to head it off, experts say. According to a report called "Code Red: The Critical Condition of Health in Texas," the Lone Star state has the largest percentage of uninsured or underinsured people in the nation and is No. 1 in uninsured or underinsured children, program coordinator Dr. Lawrence Buxton said. The report will be discussed at a symposium called "How are we going to pay for health care?" set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the CEED building. It is sponsored by Midland Memorial and Medical Center hospitals. Guest speakers include Dr. Jack Stobo, president of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and Barbara Breier, executive vice president of UT Galveston Medical Branch and director of the UTMB Center to Eliminate Health Disparity. « Back | The Newsroom »
