Houston Chronicle, April 18, 2007 GALVESTON - Tight finances will not force the University of Texas Medical Branch to abandon its traditional role of providing health care for those unable to afford health insurance, said UTMB's incoming president. "UTMB has a long-standing obligation to serve the indigent, and there is no intention for UTMB to move away from that obligation," Dr. David L. Callender said after the University of Texas Board of Regents chose him Monday over three other finalists. Callender, 49, will replace Dr. John Stobo, who will leave at the end of August after presiding over demoralizing layoffs and several years of budget cuts by the Legislature.
