Galveston County Daily News, May 1, 2007 GALVESTON - A fire in a medical device called an autoclave sent heavy smoke through the University of Texas Medical Branch's pathology building at 1108 The Strand, causing $300,000 worth of damage. About 50 people were forced to evacuate Monday, but no one was injured in the blaze or during the evacuation, Fire Marshal Gilbert Robinson said. The autoclave-which uses heat and pressure to sterilize medical equipment-apparently overheated, said John Koloen, a medical branch spokesman.
