Kids' program director prepares for exit May 1, 2007 Galveston County Daily News, April 30, 2007 GALVESTON - When James Lukefahr became the director of Galveston's ABC Clinic in 1996, it was a facility even younger than those it treated. "It had only been around for about six months," Lukefahr said. Since then, the center has treated hundreds of kids in reported abuse cases, and Lukefahr long ago lost track of how many times he has testified in those cases. Lukefahr, 52, leaves next month for a post in San Antonio, and state officials will appoint a temporary head of the clinic that examines and treats dozens of county children a year. The clinic deals with children in cases of possible abuse. Lukefahr, also a UTMB pediatrician, said seeing some of the things inflicted on children could be taxing, but his regular practice offered relief. Dr. David McCormack, the UTMB pediatrician who formed the ABC Clinic in 1996, said the clinic would remain a powerful tool to help kids. However, he also said Lukefahr's mark would be felt long after he relocated to Alamo City. « Back | The Newsroom »
