Galveston County Daily News, May 4, 2007 GALVESTON - Faculty, staff, students and the public will get a chance Monday to meet the man poised to become the University of Texas Medical Branch's next president. Medical branch President Dr. John Stobo will lead a "town meeting" during which he'll introduce his likely successor, Dr. David L. Callender. The meeting is set just two days before the University of Texas Board of Regents is expected to approve hiring Callender, CEO of the University of California-Los Angeles Hospital System. On April 16, Callender beat out four final candidates, including local favorite Dr. Courtney M. Townsend, chair and professor of the medical branch's department of surgery. Callender, 49, would become president of the county's largest employer and an institution struggling to fulfill its mission as a provider of medical care to the state's poor.
