Galveston County Daily News, May 9, 2007 GALVESTON - The job Dr. David L. Callender likely will land today has uncanny parallels to the one he'd be leaving - financial problems, consultant-driven layoffs, caring for the rising number of uninsured patients, public criticism and controversy. The University of Texas Board of Regents is expected today to hire Callender, 49, as president of the island's medical branch, the county's largest employer. If approved, Callender will replace Dr. John Stobo, who will retire in August after about a year of criticism and controversy.
