Recently, on a quiet afternoon, I took a moment to read The Daily News, and what I read told me that the island I used to know is becoming a thing of the past. This happens, of course, as we age. I just didn't expect it to happen at present. I went through the public-school system, growing up on the island. I went to Alamo, Weis and Ball schools. I graduated in 1978. My 30-year high-school reunion is next year. When I was sick, I went to John Sealy Hospital, now known to all as University of Texas Medical Branch. When I read today that Alamo is closing to cut costs, that Tuffy Tor, our beloved mascot, was brutalized, and UTMB is struggling financially, I asked myself, "What the heck happened?"
