UTMB regents confirm Callender May 10, 2007 Galveston County Daily News, May 10, 2007 GALVESTON - As expected, the University of Texas Board of Regents confirmed Wednesday the hiring of Dr. David L. Callender as president of the University of Texas Medical Branch. Callender, CEO of the University of California-Los Angeles Hospital System, will become the medical branch's fifth president. But what Callender, 49, will earn as president of the county's largest employer was still the subject of negotiations late Monday and won't be divulged until today, officials said. Callender begins work at the medical branch July 1 as president designate. He will officially become president Sept. 1. By beginning work in July, Callender would have enough overlap with Stobo to get a grasp of some of the issues facing the medical branch, he said. Those issues include medical inflation, state funding cuts and the rising number of Texans without health insurance. Callender and his wife, Teri Wenglein-Callender, have been house-hunting in Galveston, where their 10-year-old son, Kerry, will start fifth grade in the fall. At Monday's regent meeting in Austin, Kerry wielded the gavel that confirmed his father's appointment. Both Callender and his wife are native Texans. « Back | The Newsroom »
