Mayo Clinic Ariz. to test space tourists May 17, 2007 The Arizona Republic, May 16, 2007 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -Mayo Clinic Arizona could play a critical role in commercial space travel by screening pilots and passengers for heart disease, balance disorders and other medical challenges posed by out-of-this-world travel. The federal government largely has taken a hands-off approach to regulating commercial space travel, so it's up to private flight companies and passengers to decide whether participants are up to the physical rigors of space travel. Mayo Clinic Arizona said this week it has teamed with a Southern California training lab and the University of Texas to provide such comprehensive testing and training for passengers, pilots and other commercial space travelers. In addition to medical screening provided my Mayo Clinic Arizona and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Wyle Life Sciences would provide space tourists training programs that prepare them for space travel. More than two-thirds of nearly 500 people who have traveled to space have been trained by Wyle staff. « Back | The Newsroom »
