Lincoln had smallpox when he delivered Gettysburg Address May 23, 2007 CBS Channel 21, Chicago: May 23, 2007 CHICAGO (AP) - Abraham Lincoln had a bad case of smallpox when he delivered the Gettysburg Address. That's according to Doctor Armond Goldman, an immunology specialist and professor emeritus at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He and Doctor Frank Schmalstieg diagnosed serious smallpox in Lincoln after scouring historical documents, biographies and old newspaper clippings. Their report on Lincoln appears in May's Journal of Medical Biography. (This story continues to appear widely in U.S. and international publications and electronic media.) « Back | The Newsroom »
