Biz Buzz May 24, 2007 Galveston County Daily News, May 24, 2007GALVESTON – Pre-heated: Rumors that the next president of the University of Texas Medical Branch is related to pot-pie purveyor Marie Callender are half baked. Dr. David L. Callender, who begins work as UTMB president designate July 1, said he’s not connected to the Callender frozen food empire. Marie Callender began delivering homemade pies in 1948 to restaurants from a shop in Long Beach, Calif. The Marie Callender brand grew to include frozen meals and restaurants. Omaha, Neb.-based ConAgra Foods now controls the brand. But Callender’s wife does have famous food connections. Teri Wenglein-Callender’s father—George H. Weinglein—was a founding member of Luby’s Cafeteria in the late 1930s and was the chairman and CEO when the company went public in 1973. He was a member of the board until 2001, when Houston restaurateurs Chris and Harris Pappas took over the chain. « Back | The Newsroom »
