Galveston County Daily News, July 3, 2007 GALVESTON -- As Galveston County residents and visitors prepare for picnics, parades and patriotic festivities, area emergency rooms and urgent-care providers are bracing for crowds. From food poisoning to fireworks fiascos, medical-care professionals see a rise in injuries around Independence Day each year. While the injuries and illnesses differ widely, they share something in common, said Dr. Brian S. Zachariah, the medical director of emergency medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. "These are not accidents," he said.  "These are completely preventable. They are lapses in judgment. They are lapses in common sense. They are things that people do when they're not paying attention."
