Camp expands horizons for at-risk students July 9, 2007 Galveston County Daily News July 9, 2007 GALVESTON - They come quoting rappers, but they leave reciting lines by Toni Morrison and Booker T. Washington, said Bill Broun, an instructor at a summer school for at-risk Galveston students. At Youth Environmental Studies Laboratory School - a collaboration between the University of Texas Medical Branch and Galveston Independent School District - local students spend half a summer learning about their environment through field trips, creative writing, poetry, literature and scientific observation. The school not only challenges the minds of the students - many of whom are from low-income families; it also gives them a chance to see the world beyond Galveston, said Broun, a professor who teaches environmental writing at the laboratory school. « Back | The Newsroom »
