Top Stories: Midland native wins UT Galveston award July 16, 2007 Midland Reporter-Telegram, July 15, 2007 GALVESTON -- Midland native Dr. Charles Fraser Jr. doesn't feel he's done anything extraordinary to earn the 2007 Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. But his peers apparently feel otherwise. Award recipients are chosen by peers for their contribution to the medical profession and support for high standards of excellence within the profession. Fraser said he's just tried to work hard and reward the faith the UT system had in him. 'It was a surprise and a great honor," he said in a telephone interview this week. "It certainly is a very nice thing to be recognized by your peers and by your medical school as having done something that's noteworthy." Fraser is chief of congenital heart surgery and cardiac surgeon in-charge at Texas Children's Hospital, the nation's largest pediatric hospital. Academic appointments include professor of surgery and pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine and adjunct professor of bioengineering at Rice University. « Back | The Newsroom »
