Fleischer helped create Center for Independent Living July 18, 2007 Staten Island Advance, July 17, 2007 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Climbing the Great Pyramid of Giza under the scorching Egyptian sun is a feat that requires extraordinary determination and resolve. So it should come as no surprise that former Staten Islander Dr. A. Georg Fleischer scaled the ancient ruin with relative ease -- and by the seat of his pants. The former Rosebank resident, who was stricken with polio as a child and grew up 2001 to become an advocate for the disabled, died Tuesday at his Manhattan home. He was 66. Born in Weatherford, Texas, Dr. Fleischer graduated from Weatherford High School in 1958. He graduated from Austin College, Sherman, in 1962 and from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, in 1966. Determined to help others with disabilities, Dr. Fleischer moved to Manhattan, where he began his medical career at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in 1967, first as a resident and academic career training fellow and later as a member of the staff as an assistant professor. « Back | The Newsroom »
