GALVESTON, Texas - William Moyers, a recovered drug addict and author of the best-selling memoir "Broken," will speak about improving the public's understanding of issues related to addiction, treatment and recovery at a public lecture at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Moyers will make his presentation at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the William C. Levin Hall North Auditorium, 11th and Market streets. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Vice president of external affairs for the Hazelden Foundation, a nonprofit addiction treatment and research center, Moyers uses his personal experiences and professional expertise to highlight the power of addiction and the promise of recovery. He has appeared on CNN's "Larry King Live," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," the "Today" show on NBC and ABC's "Good Morning America." His efforts have been honored by numerous organizations, including the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Moyers is the son of broadcast journalist Bill Moyers.

The UTMB Center for Addiction Research is sponsoring the lecture as part of its mission to promote, stimulate and support discovery and research in addiction to find ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. September marks the 18th annual observance of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, a nationwide initiative held every September supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
