GALVESTON, Texas — The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Office of Educational Outreach is offering its Saturday Biomedical Science Academy to fourth-sixth grade students on the mainland. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 10. Students from La Marque, Texas City, Hitchcock, Santa Fe and Dickinson who are enrolled in private and public schools as well as those who are home-schooled are eligible to apply. Space is limited.
The academy will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on March 4, March 18, March 25 and April 8. All sessions will be held on the UTMB campus. The program is free to accepted participants.
This program allows students an opportunity to participate in hands-on activities in basic chemistry, physics, space science and biology. “It’s a way that students can gain an appreciation for how science can be creative, fun and applicable to everyday life,” said Alicia C. Simmons, coordinator of educational outreach.
UTMB's Office of Educational Outreach encourages interaction between UTMB's scientific community and area schools through tours, summer science camps, professional development for science teachers and other programs.
“Through these programs, UTMB plays an integral role in enhancing pre-college students’ knowledge about science and encouraging students to pursue science careers,” Simmons said.
