UTMB MEDIA ADVISORY

WHAT: Grand opening celebration of the Ronald McDonald CHEER! Room (Children's Health Education Enrichment Resource Room), tour of the facility, ribbon-cutting ceremony and an appearance by Ronald McDonald.

WHO: Presented by UTMB Regional Maternal and Child Health Program and funded by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/Galveston Inc.

WHEN: 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26.

WHERE: Pasadena Regional Maternal and Child Health Clinic, 3737 Red Bluff, Suite 150, in Pasadena.

WHY: Pasadena clinicians observed that mothers who came in for prenatal care were often distracted by their young children who accompanied them. This inability to focus on important prenatal information (e.g., control of diabetes and high blood pressure) could have serious implications for an unborn child. Through grant funds, a pediatric health curriculum was developed that teaches short health lessons to children while their mothers are receiving prenatal care. These health lessons are taught in the Ronald McDonald CHEER! Room and include dental care, personal hygiene, nutrition, exercise, and home and car safety, among others.

Refreshments will be served.
