GALVESTON, Texas - A free prostate cancer screening will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the UTMB Family Healthcare Clinic, 3828 Ursuline St., in Galveston. No appointment is necessary. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer striking men in the United States, killing nearly 30,000 annually. Because prostate cancer causes few if any symptoms in its early stages, screening is critical to ensure survival. Annual screenings are recommended for men 45 and older. African Americans or men with a family history of prostate cancer should start screenings at age 40. The screening procedure takes only a few minutes. Residents in the UTMB Division of Urology will conduct the screenings.
