Houston Chronicle Bay Area, Feb. 21, 2008 The University of Texas System board of regents has approved a proposal by UTMB to build a $90 million general research facility. Dr. Rebecca Saavedra has been appointed associate vice president for strategic management. Two UTMB orthopedic surgeons - Dr. Kelly Carmichael and Dr. James Bynum - recently returned from Jutiapa, Guatemala, where they participated in an Operation Rainbow medical mission. Dr. S.H. Subramony has been elected chairman of Cooperative Ataxia Group, National Consortium of Clinical Research for Degenerative Ataxia; Dr. Michael A. Ainsworth has been appointed as initial holder of the Hiram P. and Gloria Arnold Professorship for the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers; and Professor Thomas J. Collins has been appointed as initial holder of the Dr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Painter Professorship for the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers.
