GALVESTON, Texas - Entries are being accepted for the Youth Conservation Art Contest sponsored by the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The contest is part of UTMB's 16th annual Earth Day celebration.
The contest is open to kindergarteners through high school seniors. The winner, along with his or her classmates, will be official guests of the Earth Day Committee at the celebration on April 25. Winning artwork will be displayed on the UTMB campus and will appear on official UTMB Earth Day 2008 T-shirts, posters and promotional items.
"Keen on Green Solutions" is the theme of the art contest.
This is last year's winning drawing submitted by Mary Catherine Schaaf of Weis Middle School in Galveston.
"This theme encourages each of us to conserve our natural resources and make recycling a part of our daily lives keeping our environment clean and healthy for future generations," said Diana Davison, special events coordinator with UTMB's department of community relations. "Entrants can use their imaginations but possible topics include recycling, conserving water, adjusting thermostats, installing insulation, buying energy saving appliances, planting trees, carpooling, turning off lights, using solar or wind power, riding your bike to school, composting and not littering."
The entry deadline is March 11. An entry form and contest rules are available at the Resource Conservation Initiative Web site at http://intranet.utmb.edu/conservation/.
