Open to high school students

GALVESTON, Texas - Area high school students interested in careers in science have until March 14 to submit applications for the Summer Research Program for High School Students at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

The program, from June 9 to July 31, helps address the need for more scientists and science teachers in the United States by providing students with hands-on experience in scientific research.

As a temporary, part-time UTMB employee, participating students will be paid the federal minimum wage of $5.85 per hour and work as part of an ongoing research team for eight weeks. Participation of selected students is contingent upon a successful drug screening and security clearance.

The program is open to all high school students who will be 16 by June 9, have at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and have completed a course in chemistry. Students will be selected on the basis of grades and test scores, demonstrated motivation, recommendations from a science or math teacher and a counselor and an essay about their hopes for the experience.
