Beaumont Enterprise, April 23, 2008 BEAUMONT - A fundraiser was held Thursday to benefit the opening of a local clinic that treats sickle cell disease, an educational scholarship and creating summer programs for kids afflicted with the disease. With few local sickle cell specialists, some Southeast Texans with the disease have the added burden of going to Houston for treatment. One of the region's sickle cell specialists, Dr. Frederick Huang, director of pediatric hematology and oncology at UTMB, makes monthly visits to Beaumont to treat patients.
