GALVESTON, Texas - Six of 12 inductees into an organization that was established to recognize excellence in medical education teach at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

The University of Texas Academy of Health Science Education recently conducted its annual peer review that each year culminates with 12 new members being selected into the academy. The educators are chosen from among the six academic health science campuses of the UT System.

The selection of the six UTMB professors was applauded by Dr. Garland D. Anderson, executive vice president and provost and dean of the School of Medicine.

"Induction into the academy is quite an honor, and I am so very proud of our faculty. They are an example of the outstanding medical educators we have at UTMB," Anderson said. "The fact that six of the 12 inductees are from UTMB is a powerful statement about the quality of our faculty and the quality of education we provide. It is particularly significant that they were selected by their peers."

The UTMB inductees are:

Dr. Daniel M. Breitkopf, an associate professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology.

Robert J. Bulik, an associate professor in the department of family medicine.

Barbara G. Ferrell, an associate professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Jose L. Gonzalez, an associate professor in the department of pediatrics.

Dr. Ruth E. Levine, professor in the departments of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and internal medicine.

Dr. Karen E. Szauter, an associate professor in the departments of internal medicine and preventive medicine and community health.

The academy was established to foster excellence in teaching in the health sciences by recognizing outstanding educators. Some of the criteria include teaching, curriculum development, counseling, mentoring, leadership and research.
